Sustainability is more than just a buzzword – it's a commitment to taking care of our planet and ensuring a better future for all. UMSU has a commitment to be environmentally sustainable by avoiding the production of items that pollutes land, air or water excessively or destroy or waste non-recurring resources or valuable environments.

Many events are subject to sustainability regulations, so it's crucial to stay compliant with local laws.

How We Achieve Sustainability

Waste Reduction
  • Provide  recycling and food waste bins at your event to encourage attendees to dispose of items responsibly.
  • Reduce food packaging and use the Wash Stations provided by the university.

Sustainable Sourcing
  • Choose local suppliers and vendors to reduce transportation emissions and support the community.
  • Opt for reusable or biodegradable items like utensils, plates, and cups.

Communication and Education
  • Educate event attendees about sustainability initiatives and encourage them to participate.
  • Use digital platforms for event promotions and reduce paper waste.

Merchandise

Before requesting merchandise, consider its impact, both in engagement and environmentally. Avoid single-use plastics and think about whether students truly need another tote bag or branded pen.

Explore innovative ways to engage with students by providing practical and sustainable items that align with your department's goals. For instance, offer sunscreen/sunglasses for SummerFest, a bike toolkit for Enviro, a skipping rope for Activities, or Bluetooth beanies for WinterFest.

Minimising Printing

When printing is necessary, we use recycled paper stocks and vegetable inks whenever possible, even if they may be slightly more expensive.

Consider digital publications, upcycling, and producing only what is useful and necessary to reduce waste.
