What is Event Compliance and Why does it Matter?
Compliance isn't about red tape and ticking boxes – it's about safety, following laws, and running a successful event. This should be an enjoyable experience for everyone, so compliance ensures the event:
- Is safe for attendees.
- Meets legal requirements.
- Minimises risks.
- Runs smoothly.
Your Quick Checklist
Here's a snapshot of what you need to consider:
All Events:
- Risk Assessment: Understand the basics of risk assessments to identify and manage potential issues.
- Egress and Traffic Management: Plan for egress (how to enter and exit) in your sitemaps, traffic management, and emergency exits to ensure safe event flow.
- Accessibility: Ensure your event is as accessible as possible to all attendees. Don't know where to start? Check out this government checklist and this human rights guide.
- Sustainability: Learn about sustainability and ethical practices - this is UoM's guide to sustainable events.
- Noise Management: UMSU’s Noise Management Plan outlines the strategies that we need implement to ensure compliance with relevant noise regulations, specifically the Environment Protection Act 2017, Environment Protection Regulations 2021, and Noise Limit and Assessment Protocol (Publication 1826).
Food and Drinks:
- Safe Food Handling: Learn about food safety to keep your attendees healthy and happy. All OBs are required to hold a SFH certificate to champion safe practices among volunteers, students, and other staff.
- Waste Management and Cleaning keep your event clean and safe - we can help book bins, cleaning, and reusable crockery for your event.
- Alcohol Service: If alcohol is served, a staff member with an RSA must be present along with adequate catering, harm reduction strategies, and a thorough risk assessment. We have legal obligations to students and staff that are strict - but we're here to help you navigate them.
- Security: If your event has alcohol, you likely need security and potentially emergency response plans.
Staffing + Equipment:
- Marquee Compliance: Anyone putting up marquees must have an in-person induction with Events.
- Event Casuals: Event Casuals have been trained in all things events and how to run them safely. Contact us to book them in for your event.
- Contractor Induction: If you have an artist or supplier for your event, they are a Contractor and need to follow University contractor induction procedures, including the university induction module.
- Medic, First Aid, and Mental Health First Aid: We have a duty of care to students at our events. Your event may require hired medics, an identified first aid officer, and/or mental health first aid in order to comply with our legal responsibilities.
